About Me

My name is Mel Buer, and I am an independent multimedia journalist and university instructor based in Omaha, Nebraska. My previous work includes co-hosting and producing various progressive podcasts, and you can find my bylines in a variety of publications, including Protean Magazine and The Real News Network. I received my MA in English Literature from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 2021, and I teach in the First Year Writing Program on the same campus as an adjunct instructor.

I am a dues-paying member of the Industrial Workers of the World – Freelance Journalists Union, and have worked on multiple organizing campaigns in the last few years, as well as co-written multiple external and internal communications that the IWW-FJU has sent to workers and published on social media. Additionally, I’ve conducted interviews with multiple authors for the Industrial Worker, the IWW’s official publication.

My writing and research focuses on labor struggles in the Midwest, movement politics and protests, and alternative media. I am writing a book called F*ck Your Newsroom, which seeks to examine key aspects of the alternative and independent progressive media ecosystem in the US since 2016.
